The Hidden STress of Waiting: Why Anticipation Can Feel So Hard

By: Marissa Pollet

Waiting is a part of life. We wait for test results, a text message, a job interview, a medical diagnosis, an important phone call, or an answer we desperately want. The difficult part is that waiting can create stress even when nothing is actually happening yet. Your mind knows something is coming, you can feel the weight of that, but you don't know exactly what the outcome will be. That uncertainty can keep your brain on high alert and create unnecessary stress.

Why Does Waiting Feel So Stressful?

When we are waiting for something important, our minds often try to fill in the blanks and constantly search for answers. We may replay conversations, imagine different outcomes, check our phones repeatedly, or jump to the worst-case scenario.

Anticipation can lead to:

• Constantly checking for updates

• Difficulty concentrating on other things

• Marital stress

• Trouble sleeping

• Feeling restless or on edge

• Replaying "what if" thoughts

• Trying to predict an outcome you cannot control

Sometimes, the anticipation feels worse than the actual outcome. Once we finally know the answer, whether it is good or bad, the uncertainty is gone and we are left to process the outcome. We can respond to what is real instead of imagining every possible scenario.

The Hardest Part: You Can't Control the Waiting

One of the most frustrating things about waiting is that the outcome may depend on someone or something else. No amount of thinking or obsessing over the impending outcome can force it to arrive any quicker.

You cannot make someone text you back faster.

You cannot speed up an interview decision.

You cannot force test results to arrive sooner.

You cannot control exactly when you will receive an answer.

The only thing you can ultimately control is how you spend the time in between.

How to Manage the Stress of Waiting

1. Focus on what is actually happening.

Ask yourself: What do I know right now? Try to separate facts from the stories your anxiety is creating. Write down the facts and challenge yourself to remove the stories based on evidence.

2. Give yourself something else to focus on.

Waiting becomes harder when it is the only thing occupying your mind. Work, exercise, hobbies, household tasks, or spending time with people you enjoy can help redirect your attention and shift focus back to the present.

3. Limit checking.

Constantly checking your phone, email, or an online portal may provide a moment of relief, but it can also keep your anxiety activated. Decide when you will check instead of checking repeatedly.

4. Notice the "what ifs."

When your mind starts predicting every possible outcome, gently remind yourself: I don't know yet. You don't have to solve a problem that hasn't happened. You cannot fix uncertainty.

5. Bring yourself back to today.

Instead of living in the moment when you will finally get the answer, ask: What do I need from myself today to feel ok?”

You Don't Have to Like Waiting

Waiting can be uncomfortable, especially when something matters deeply to you. The goal isn't to convince yourself that you shouldn't feel anxious or impatient; those feelings are real and valid. The goal is to remind yourself that uncertainty does not require constant mental preparation. No matter how many times your mind "scans for solutions" will not force the outcome to arrive any sooner. You may not be able to control when the answer comes, but you can choose how much energy you give waiting for it today.
