Why Anxiety Feels worse in the morning - and how to take back your day
By: Marissa Pollet
If you’ve ever opened your eyes in the morning and immediately felt a wave of dread wash over you, you’re not alone. For many people, anxiety is at its peak right when they wake up, and this occurs for very specific reasons. Before the coffee. Before the notifications. Before their feet even hit the floor, it's the anxiety upon waking that takes center stage.
Morning anxiety is real — and there’s a reason for it.
Why Anxiety Peaks When You Wake Up
1. Your Stress Hormones Are Naturally Higher
Chemically, your body is primed for alertness in the morning. It’s the initial charge your body receives upon waking up each morning.
• Cortisol, often called the “stress hormone,” peaks within the first 30–45 minutes after waking. Your body is geared up for the day, but your mind is equally active.
• This is known as the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR).
• Its job is to wake you up and prepare you for the day.
For someone prone to anxiety, that natural surge can feel less like motivation and more like panic. You can feel things such as a racing heart, a tight chest, and looping thoughts. When the body feels this, it’s naturally energized but at this same time your brain interprets it as danger.
2. Your Mind Is Unprotected
When you first wake up and begin your day, a flood of emotions and thoughts can come racing in even before you step out of bed. This can make you feel anxious and mentally unprotected:
• You haven’t distracted yourself yet.
• You haven’t moved your body.• You haven’t challenged your thoughts.
Your brain can immediately scan for problems. It often jumps to:
• What could go wrong today?
• What did I forget?
• What am I behind on?
Morning quiet leaves space, and anxiety fills it quickly.
How to Stop Dreading the Morning
You may not be able to stop cortisol from chemically rising. But you can change how you respond to it, which helps you regain control over the morning dread.
1. Create a “No Thinking” Buffer
For the first 10–15 minutes:
• Don’t check your phone.
• Don’t scroll emails.
• Don’t mentally plan the week.
Instead:
• Sit up slowly.
• Take 5 deep belly breaths.
• Stretch your arms overhead.
• Put your feet on the floor and notice physical sensations.
Ground your body before engaging your thoughts and be aware of the simplicity and quiet of the morning.
2. Move Before You Ruminate
Movement metabolizes stress hormones.
Try:
• A 5–10 minute walk
• Light stretching
• A few yoga poses
• Even making your bed with intention
Action interrupts overthinking. Try simple yet effective movements that help level out the natural cortisol levels.
3. Delay Worry on Purpose
When anxious thoughts show up, say:
“Not now. I’ll think about this at 10am.” Try to set a mental appointment to not dismiss the worry but instead plan to think about it later. Delaying the thoughts will help decrease the sense of immediate worry and most times by the time 10am arrives it won’t feel as important or you even forgot what you had been so worried about in the first place.
5. Reframe the Sensation
Instead of:
• “Why am I so anxious?”
Try:
• “My body is waking up.”
• “This is just cortisol.”
• “This feeling will pass.”
Morning anxiety often fades as the day unfolds, and your body regulates. Remind yourself that the anxious feelings are a correlation to the everyday stress hormones and they will naturally subside.
Welcoming a New Day with a Calmer Approach
Morning anxiety isn’t a personal flaw. It’s biology plus habit. These two paired together tell you that one part is out of your control, but how you approach and respond to the anxiety is entirely up to you. Let your goal be not to eliminate how you initially feel, but rather torespond to the thoughts and not let them ruin your mental well-being. Greet each morning not with dread, but a gentle way that sets the tone for a calm day.
