Self-Love Matters: Embrace who you are and your full potential
By: Marissa Pollet
At the heart of every emotionally healthy life lies one crucial, foundational element: self-love. It's more than just a trending hashtag but rather the quiet force that allows us to step into our full potential, own our story, and show up in life with confidence and resilience. Self love is the cornerstone of unlocking who we are and accepting those around us.
The Impact of Low Self-Esteem on Your Potential
When your self-esteem is low, you are held back in ways that are often invisible but truly impactful towards truly loving yourself and embracing your individuality.
Here’s how low self-esteem can affect your ability to see and reach your potential:
• Fear of failure or rejection: You may avoid opportunities because you assume you’re not good enough to succeed. Even though you have every qualification to succeed, the fear of failure can overpower your ability to embrace change.
• Chronic self-doubt: Even when you do well, you may second-guess yourself, unable to recognize your strengths.
• Seeking constant validation: You may rely heavily on others to affirm your worth, which makes your confidence fragile. Constant validation is a slippery slope. It feels wonderful in the moment but having to seek and obtain constant approval is extremely draining.
• Difficulty setting boundaries: When you don’t value yourself, it’s harder to say no, leading to burnout or resentment. You are scared to potentially have others be mad at you or create conflict.
• Imposter syndrome: You may feel like a fraud even when you’ve earned your place, diminishing your accomplishments.
This lack of self-trust and internal validation blocks you from taking the risks and steps needed to grow into your full, authentic self.
Why Self-Love Is Essential
Self-love is not arrogance, or being self-absorbed. It’s the deep and compassionate relationship you cultivate with yourself. When rooted in self-love, you:
• Acknowledge your inherent worth, regardless of achievements or approval. You love yourself for who you are and are capable of self validation.
• Develop resilience during hard times, knowing you are capable and deserving.
• Make healthier choices in relationships, work, and daily life.
• Celebrate your individuality, instead of trying to mold yourself to others’ expectations. No two people are the same, your individuality is what makes you unique and beautiful.
• See your strengths more clearly, empowering you to pursue your goals with confidence. When you love yourself you value your strengths and want to apply them to reach your full potential.
Self-love fuels your ability to evolve, lead, connect and embrace yourself and those around you whole heartedly.
How to Learn to Love Yourself and Embrace What Makes You Wonderful
Self-love is a practice, not a destination. Like any relationship, the one you have with yourself needs attention, kindness, and intention. Here are some key ways to begin:
1. Challenge Negative Self-Talk
Pay attention to your inner dialogue. How does your tone dictate your attitude?
• Practice replacing harsh thoughts with kinder ones.
• Use affirmations that feel real and affirming, such as “I am learning to value myself more each day.” “I am a work in progress and each day is a day for growth.”
2. Celebrate Your Strengths
Take time to recognize what you do well, whether big of small.
• Keep a journal where you note things you’re proud of daily or weekly. Take the time to re read entries recognizing your success stories.• Ask trusted friends or colleagues what they admire in you and embrace their affirmations.
3. Set Boundaries That Honor Your Needs
Boundaries are acts of self-respect.
• Learn to say no without guilt when something compromises your well-being. Surround yourself with people that make you feel good and you value their company.
• Prioritize rest, time for yourself, and relationships that nourish you.
4. Practice Self-Compassion
Perfection is not the goal — growth is.
• When you make a mistake, speak to yourself with the same grace you’d offer a loved one.
• You’re allowed to be a work-in-progress and make mistakes.
5. Spend Time Doing What Fills You Up
You reconnect with your true self through joy, creativity, and rest.
• Revisit hobbies or interests that bring you pleasure.
• Take mindful breaks and create rituals that ground you.
6. Surround Yourself with Uplifting People
You deserve to be seen and supported.
• Build relationships with people who respect and value you as you and limit time with those that do not.
• Let go of toxic dynamics that reinforce negative beliefs about yourself.
You Are Worth Loving
The journey to self-love is about coming home to yourself and peeling back the layers of comparison and fear to discover who you’ve always been underneath. You are a whole, capable, human being worthy of self-self and acceptance.
As you begin to foster self-love, you see your true potential and embrace that it’s not something you have to earn, but rather the notion that was always there, waiting for you to believe in it.
